Random question about Japanese dishes?

 I've never been to Japan, but it looks like in movies, people never mawkish dishes, as they are still malleable generic dishes and other tableware, such as soy sauce, etc. It seems that in America Everyone has a GIST or a status symbol to have beautiful dishes like that.

 Silver is not preferred in Japan, but ceramics and lacquer / or because they generally eat Japanese food. Plastics are rare, except for infants, patients or sanatorium cheap dinners.
