Why do some cookware pots and pans have a small hole in the glass lids?

 Why would anyone want to have a cavity in their glass covers over their pots and pans?

 To provide steam to release. The lids are several holes that have to empty the dishwasher not rich after cooking (pasta) so you do not have to deal with the hot steam in the transfer of items in a colander.
